Swell Maps were an English experimental DIY, early punk and post-punk rock group from Birmingham, England active in various forms between 1972 and 1980. Influenced by bands such as T. Rex and German krautrock groups such as Can and Faust, they went on to be influential to many others in the post-punk era.

Swell Maps. English post-punk group, formed in 1972 in Birmingham, England, UK by brothers Kevin Godfrey (aka Epic Soundtracks) and Adrian Godfrey (aka Nikki Sudden ). The lineup was completed with Richard Earl, David Barrington, John Cockrill and Jowe Head.

24 de may. de 2021 · Scaldwell suggests Soundtracks coined the name Swell Maps “just before that first studio adventure and it quickly became real”, borrowing it from Gerry Anderson's puppet TV series Thunderbirds. The session yielded five songs, including the jagged ninety-second thrill-ride ‘Read About Seymour’.
These days, Swell Maps are now known as pioneers of what is now referred to as the “Alternative Rock” scene. Musically, they mixed punk rock with experimental and psychedelic sounds. Swell Maps released four singles and two albums in a brief but dramatic career, in a partnership with Rough Trade Records.
