MEREDITH MONK (b. November 20, 1942, New York City) is a composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music-theater works, films and installations. Recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time, she is a pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance.”

Meredith Monk è nata il 20 novembre 1942 da Audrey Lois (Zellman) Monk e Theodore Glenn Monk a New York.Sua madre, cantante professionista conosciuta con il nome di scena di Audrey Marsh, era anch'essa figlia di musicisti professionisti: il baritono basso russo Joseph B. Zellman, e Rose (Kornicker) Zellman, una pianista di origine ebreo-tedesche di Filadelfia.
