Balliol was in 1973 the first of the traditional all-male colleges to elect a woman as a Fellow and Tutor, and the College has admitted women as students since 1979: one of them, Masako Owada (Balliol 1988-90, resident in Holywell Manor 1988-9), was married to HIH The Crown Prince of Japan in June 1993.
Not all courses are offered by any one college. Balliol offers a significant number and range of courses across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences, reflecting the many academic interests within our community.

Balliol is also one of the oldest Oxford colleges, founded in 1263, which means that holding an event here allows your guests to experience life in a traditional, working college with a 750-year history and a worldwide academic reputation.

Balliol also runs a Day Nursery in Rawlinson Road in north Oxford, which gives priority to those with a connection to Balliol, such as staff, students and Fellows. Balliol has an excellent kitchen, which provides lunch and dinner in Hall seven days a week during term time, including options for vegetarians, vegans and those with special dietary requirements.
