The group consists of founding duo and principal songwriters Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals), along with Martin Cooper (keyboards, saxophone) and Stuart Kershaw (drums).

The track was commissioned by John Hughes to be used in the final scene of his 1986 film Pretty in Pink. The song, with its captivating melody and heartfelt lyrics, became an instant hit and remains a beloved track to this day.
