It’s an ‘80s riff on Ingmar Bergman’s classic Persona, one of the all-time great portraits of obsession. Both films are about repressed women who lose their own personalities in thrall to an enigmatic actress.

Having turned down Diane Keaton , Melanie Griffith , and Kelly McGillis , Seidelmen decided to cast Madonna, whom she had met in the "downtown music scene", and felt had an "interesting buzz".
