The reasoning behind making this album that I've read is that Billy Joel didn't have the creative control during his first three albums to record in the studio with his own band. So he usually had to work with studio musicians, which is fine, but not what Billy Joel wanted, so this album is in a way the vision Billy originally had for these songs in the first place.

The song is about a man who most likely has had a troubled past, with no place that ever felt like home. He doesn’t care about this anymore because when he is with his girlfriend, wherever they are can be home.
