Hace 6 días · Charles Seeger and Mantle Hood were two ethnomusicologists that adopted the musicological approach. Hood started one of the first American university programs dedicated to ethnomusicology, often stressing that his students must learn how to play the music they studied.

Charles established the first musicology curriculum in the United States at the University of California, Berkeley , in 1913; helped found the American Musicological Society ; and was a key founder of the academic discipline of ethnomusicology .

Charles, a well-known composer and musicologist, helped create a collective of radically minded composers during the Depression, hoping (and largely failing) to invent a revolutionary proletarian music.
