Soundgarden, 1984'te Seattle, Washington'da şarkıcı ve ritim gitaristi Chris Cornell, baş gitarist Kim Thayil (her ikisi de grubun her enkarnasyonunda yer alan tek üyelerdir) ve basçı Hiro Yamamoto tarafından kurulan bir Amerikan grunge grubuydu. Matt Cameron 1986'da grubun tam zamanlı davulcusu olurken, basçı Ben Shepherd 1990'da Yamamoto'nun yerine kalıcı olarak gruba dahil oldu.
