Allan Kaprow (August 23, 1927 – April 5, 2006) was an American performance artist, installation artist, painter, and assemblagist . He helped to develop the "Environment" and "Happening" in the late 1950s and 1960s, as well as their theory. His Happenings — some 200 of them — evolved over the years.
Originally situated in a small outdoor space at the back of the building, Yard was Kaprow’s contribution, designed to sit on a fuzzy line between being a new form of art with which people could interact, and looking like an everyday junkyard.
