In this version, the D'Bari are a race of shape-shifting aliens whose planet was destroyed by the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force. Vuk is the leader of the D'Bari and attempts to manipulate Jean Grey, who is possessed by the Phoenix Force following an X-Men mission to rescue the crew of the space shuttle Endeavour.
