William E. Clarke was a medical student at the Berkshire Medical College in Massachusetts. In January 1842 he returned to his hometown of Rochester, New York, during a break in the lecture schedule. Clarke discovered that the sister of one of his classmates, a Miss Hobbie, needed a tooth extracted.

When William Clarke was born on 17 November 1791, in Leicester St Mary, Leicestershire, England, his father, Thomas Clark, was 30 and his mother, Jane Gibson, was 32. He married Jane Warrack on 25 September 1836. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 2 daughters.
William Clark (August 1, 1770 – September 1, 1838) was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor. A native of Virginia, he grew up in pre-statehood Kentucky before later settling in what became the state of Missouri.
