One has Clapton telling biographer Ray Coleman that “Slowhand” was an ironic, tongue-in-cheek allusion to Clapton’s ability to play incredibly fast.

According to the band’s rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, Clapton would sometimes break a guitar string during a live performance and stay on stage to replace it.
In his 2007 autobiography, Clapton recalled that the name "Slowhand" seemed to be hanging on to his real name, because it seemed to be well received by both his American friends and fans who think of the Wild West when hearing the nickname.

Gomelsky actually considered Clapton a fast guitar player, and felt that in relation to the guitarist’s garnered slow handclaps from the audience, the name was a facetious play on words.
