John Anthony Conteh, MBE (born 27 May 1951) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1971 to 1980. He held the WBC light-heavyweight title from 1974 to 1977, and regionally the European, British and Commonwealth titles between 1973 and 1974. As an amateur, he represented England and won a gold medal in the middleweight division at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games.
John now lives in London, but regularly visits his home town, often to experience the thrill of a big fight, albeit from the other side of the ropes. His son James is a pro- golfer and John is involved in lot of charities, mostly related to golf, he is no slouch at the game himself, playing off a handicap of eight.

Britain’s John Conteh had everything. He was immensely talented, good looking and during the early 1970s competed in the heavyweight division, which was the focus of the boxing world’s attention. Promoters and managers were in fact looking for a British version of Muhammad Ali but ironically it was “The Greatest” himself who advised Conteh to switch lanes after 18 professional bouts.

Losing his biggest supporter at such a young age left him devastated and uncertain about his future. However, he found solace in boxing and used it as an outlet for all his frustrations.
