The first external frame rucksack to receive a patent was made by Henry Clay Merriam, a U.S. Army officer during the late 19th century. Introduced in 1887, Merriam's innovative pack was made with drab duck canvas, which was attached to a light steel frame.
15 de ene. de 2022 · Knapsack originated in Germany and has been around since 1603. It wasn't until 1910 that the term "backpack" gained its first printed attention. Soon, the term began to designate any bag worn on a person's back with a shoulder strap.
17 de may. de 2018 · Before there were backpacking packs there were knapsacks, which were packs with shoulder straps that lacked any structure. Henry Merriam submitted a patent in 1877 (patented the following year) for a pack for the United States Army that used sheet metal to rig the bag away from the wearer’s body.
In 1878, Merriam was issued a patent for his Knapsack: a pack which used an external sheet-metal frame. The knapsack was invented for use by the US Army. Instead of shoulder straps, the metal frame held the pack away from the soldier’s body.
Ötzi was discovered in the Alps between Austria and Italy, and he had a simple frame backpack made of a wooden frame with a leather pouch attached to it. So, while it’s challenging to attribute the invention of the first backpack to a specific individual or culture, backpacks have a rich and diverse history that spans many centuries.
2 de jul. de 2019 · The association of backpacks with the outdoor innovations dates to at least the 1920s, when inventor Lloyd F. Nelson added a wooden frame to the sack, which made the bag more sturdy. Nelson’s invention came to be called “Trapper Nelson’s Indian Pack Board.”.
