As of the 2020 census the population was 43,976, [5] making it the 3rd most populous city in New Hampshire after Manchester and Nashua .

The site was granted by the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1725 as Penacook Plantation. Settled in 1727, the community was incorporated as Rumford in 1733 by Massachusetts.
