George Segal (26 de noviembre de 1924 – 9 de junio de 2000) fue un pintor y escultor estadounidense vinculado al movimiento conocido como Arte Pop. Le fue concedida la Medalla Nacional de las Artes de Estados Unidos en 1999.
Viajando una noche en autobús de Nueva York a Nueva Jersey a Segal se le ocurrió la idea de "El conductor de autobús". A Segal el conductor le pareció muy huraño, arrogante, triste...pensó: "Dios mío, ¿a este engreído le confío yo mi vida?".

In the bus driver (who has been likened to Charon, the ferryman of Greek myth who guides dead souls to the underworld), Segal saw "the dignity of helplessness—a massive, strong man, surrounded by machinery, and yet basically a very unheroic man trapped by forces larger than himself that he couldn't control and least of all understand."
