San Jose is not as accessible; the 17 bus costs $7 (no discount) and takes about 45 minutes to get over the hill. Both are expensive cities to live in. Santa Cruz was more expensive last time I checked, so if money is a pressing concern, Davis is worth consideration. Going in with friends is important. It's also not.
