Transnistria is a self-proclaimed breakaway state between Ukraine and Moldova that has de facto independence since 1992. It has a multi-ethnic population of about 33% Russians, 33% Moldovans, and 26% Ukrainians. The region's history is shaped by its geography, ethnic diversity, and political conflict with Russia and the West.
