For 802.11g, the standard rates are 54, 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 9 and 6 Mbps. Senders attempt to find the transmission rate that maximizes throughput; for example, 36 Mbps with a packet loss rate of 25% has an effective throughput of 36 × 75% = 27 Mbps, and so is better than 24 Mbps with no losses.
Specifically, retransmitted data is counted only once when calculating goodput but might be counted twice under some interpretations of “throughput”. Data rates are generally measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps); the use of the lower-case “b” here denotes bits.
