Studies show that women who have been trafficked for sex have higher levels of fear, are more isolated, and have greater trauma and mental health needs than other victims of crime. Trafficked women and girls also encounter high rates of physical and sexual violence, memory loss, sexually transmitted diseases, and traumatic brain injuries.
WOMEN AND GIRLS ARE SEVERELY AFFECTED BY TRAFFICKING. In 2020, for every 10 victims detected globally, about: 4 were adult women. 2 were girls. Surveys of service providers indicate that women and girls have been more vulnerable to traficking for sexual exploitation in local areas and online.
The report focuses on efforts to address the gender dimensions of trafficking, with a special focus on the economic drivers and consequences of trafficking, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trafficking of women and girls.
On World Day against Trafficking in Persons, three women survivors tell us their stories. Their words are testament to their incredible resilience and point toward the urgency for action to prosecute perpetrators and support survivors along their journeys to restored dignity, health and hope.
In some parts of the world, women trafficking women is the norm. The second most common form of human trafficking is forced labour (18%), although this may be a misrepresentation because forced labour is less frequently detected and reported than trafficking for sexual exploitation. Worldwide, almost 20% of all trafficking victims are children.
The 2022 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons also examines court cases showing that female victims are subject to physical or extreme violence at hands of traffickers at a rate three times higher than males, and children are subjected almost twice as often as adults.
