Richard Prince's art derives from a lineage that traces generations from Duchamp to Warhol, to Kosuth, Baldessari, Gilbert and George and Dan Graham. Untitled (Four women looking in the same direction) is a seminal work conceived and executed in the same year as the Untitled (living rooms).
In Four Women Looking in the Same Direction, 1977, the female figures are locked together in a shared pose and shared anonymity. Prince’s most iconic series, begun in the early 1980s, lifts images of cowboys from Marlboro cigarette adverts.
