I found the old Scottish language hard to read, but in ballad form it's quite poetic and there are side-by-side translations available. In looking at the original ballad, it's clear that the artist/author took the barest of bones and augmented the story with a modern interpretation spin that was very welcome, but kept true to the themes of loyalty/bravery/drive of the female protagonist.
