Wishes. We use the verb wish or the phrase if only to talk about things which we want but which are not possible: I wish I could see you next week. If only we could stop for a drink. I wish we had a bigger house. They are always busy. If only they had more time. John was very lazy at school. Now he wishes he had worked harder.
Wish + (that) + past simple: We can use 'wish' to talk about something that we would like to be different in the present or the future. It's used for things which are impossible or very unlikely. I wish that I had a big house (I don't have a big house, but it's a nice idea!).
