Nazareth. Coordinates: 32°42′07″N 35°18′12″E. Nazareth ( / ˈnæzərəθ / NAZ-ər-əth; Arabic: النَّاصِرَة, romanized : an-Nāṣira; Hebrew: נָצְרַת, romanized : Nāṣəraṯ; Syriac: ܢܨܪܬ, romanized : Naṣrath) is the largest city in the Northern District of Israel. In 2022 its population was 78,007. [1] .

In the New Testament Nazareth is associated with Jesus as his boyhood home, and in its synagogue he preached the sermon that led to his rejection by his fellow townsmen. The city is now a centre of Christian pilgrimage.

What makes Nazareth significant is that, as Scripture tells, it was the childhood hometown of Jesus. Jesus certainly made this otherwise unimportant village highly significant.

Nazareth is famous for one thing, and one thing only: it is the home town of Jesus. It was here that Jesus spent his boyhood, living with his mother and father, and here that he faced the sceptical townsfolk of Nazareth. The village seems to have been held in some contempt in 1st century Palestine.
Nazareth is the largest Arab-Israeli city in Israel. A predominantly Arab-Christian town until the Arab-Israeli war that established Israel's independence, it became a predominantly Muslim city as a result of influx of Muslim Arab refugees during and after the war. Conflicts between Muslim and Christian residents have occasionally flared.
