Carey, William. (1761–1834), pioneer of the modern missionary movement and a distinguished scholar of Indian languages. Born on Aug. 17, 1761, in Northamptonshire, Carey joined the Baptist church in 1783 and served as pastor at Moulton and Leicester.
William Carey is called the father of modern missions. Of course we want to know something about him. In the year 1761, he was born in a lowly cottage, in the little town of Paulerspury in England. His father was a schoolmaster.

Chapter 1 — God's School. Our story is about one of the greatest Englishman who ever went to India, William Carey. Today [early 1900's] boys and girls in Sunday School are giving and collecting money for Missions, and Carey has played an important part and has been called the "father of modern missions."
William and Dorothy Carey had seven children, five sons and two daughters; both girls died in infancy, as did son Peter, who died at the age of 5. Thomas Old himself died soon afterward, and Carey took over his business, during which time he taught himself Hebrew , Italian, Dutch , and French, often reading while working on the shoes.
