The opening track on the Smiths’ third studio album of the same name, the story of the Smiths' song, 'The Queen Is Dead', actually begins with a live performance of the band's 1985 song 'Barbarism Begins at Home', where Morrissey ad-libbed the lyrics "the queen is dead", which is a phrase from the 1964 novel Last Exit to Brooklyn.
