Chilomastix mesnili was found in the stools of 2.8% of 143 people with gastro-intestinal symptoms and in 10% of 50 asymptomatic people. In the infected symptomatic patients bacteriological cultures of the stools revealed Shigella sonni and Proteus morgani (both pathogenic) and Escherichia coli (potentially pathogenic).
Chilomastix mesnili, while not uncommonly seen in stool specimens, is a nonpathogen, as is Pentatrichomonas hominis (formerly known as Trichomonas hominis), and the rarely seen Enteromonas hominis and Retortamonas intestinalis.
