“Steely Dan on 8-track” is an oxymoron. But The Nightfly on cassette may have sounded better than the original CD because that album was an early digital recording and maybe coulda used true tape warmth. Fagen reveals in his book Eminent Hipsters that reveals he belatedly learned he was once arrested.
