After Yule Mae steals what turns out to be a worthless ring from Hilly to try to get the tuition money, Hilly arranges a super-speedy trial for Yule Mae, along with a $500 court fine and four years in the Mississippi State Penitentiary. Yule Mae is a friend of Aibileen Clark.
Miss Walters. Miss Hilly’s college-educated maid who steals a ring to pay for her twins’ college education. Yule May asked Miss Hilly for a loan, but when she refused, she resorted to theft in order to give her boys the opportunity to get an education. In revenge, Miss Hilly has her thrown in jail.
A few days later, Yule Mae vacuums and finds a ruby ring behind the sofa in the living room and puts the ring inside her apron pocket. The next day when she and Aibileen gets off the bus, two white police officers see Yule Mae and arrest her. Yule Mae being arrested. Yule Mae begins to resist and screams to Aibileen to give her purse.
Hilly refuses to advance money to her new maid, Yule May Davis, who needs $75 to send both her twins to Tougaloo College. When Yule May pawns a lost ring she found under a sofa, she is violently arrested after Hilly reports her. This incident and Medgar Evers's assassination inspire more maids to share their stories.
