One story is about a clipper ship that crashed against the rocks nearby, causing all of its crew to drown after mistaking a campfire for a lighthouse while sailing through an unearthly fog. Machen finishes the story as midnight strikes and paranormal activity begins occurring around the town.

The iconic lighthouse featured in the film was filmed at the Gulf of the Farallones, Point Reyes, Marin County California. Bodega Bay, made famous in Hitchcock's The Birds, was also used to film various scenes.

But it’s minor only by degree, because when compared to the glut of early ‘80s horror movies rather than to the Carpenter canon, The Fog is a fine fright flick with excellent visuals, smart scene direction, and a good cast.
