The first Americans to actually build a successful gasoline car were the Duryea brothers, Charles and Frank.
In Springfield, Massachusetts, brothers Charles and Frank Duryea founded the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1893, becoming the first American automobile manufacturing company. The Autocar Company, founded in 1897, established many innovations still in use and remains the oldest operating motor vehicle manufacturer in the US.

Henry Ford took the 1896 Quadricycle, his first automobile, to New York City as evidence in his legal appeal against the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers. ALAM claimed that its patent required automakers to pay royalties on each gasoline-powered car made, and a lower court agreed.

In 1896, the Duryea Brothers produced 13 cars by hand – in their garage at 47 Taylor Street – and thus Duryea became the first-ever commercially produced vehicle, and also the largest automobile factory in the United States.
