They reveled in the physical sensation of vices - good and bad - rather than the artifice. Bandleader Robert Smith came into the world unapologetically grumpy and weird; his anguish inchoate when it wasn’t transparently melodramatic, his sudden bursts of whimsy & rapture equally extreme.
