Like Mondego, he becomes wealthy and powerful, but loses everything when Monte Cristo takes his revenge. Danglars’s obsession with the accumulation of wealth makes him an easy target for Monte Cristo, who has seemingly limitless wealth on hand to exact his revenge.
The Count of Monte Cristo, Romantic novel by French author Alexandre Dumas pere, published serially in 1844–46 and in book form in 1844–45. The work, which is set during the time of the Bourbon Restoration in France, tells the story of an unjustly incarcerated man who escapes to find revenge.
Dantès reappears nine years later, in 1838, as the mysterious, fabulously wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. Fernand is now the Count de Morcerf, Danglars a baron and banker, and Villefort a procureur du roi ('royal prosecutor').
