  4. In a civil war, what is a “cost” to one side may sometimes be regarded as a “gain” to the other. An obvious example of was the emancipation of 4.5 million slaves. Goldin and Lewis estimate that freeing the slaves resulted in an economic loss of almost 2 billion dollars to southern planters.
