It has echoed with the music of the Boston Symphony Orchestra every summer since, except for the war years 1942-45. In 1959, the installation of the Edmund Hawes Talbot Orchestra Canopy, along with other improvements, produced the Shed's present world-famous acoustics.
Tanglewood’s main entrance is 1.4 miles west of Lenox Center on Route 183 (West Street). Or take the Taconic State Parkway to 295 east to 41 south to Tanglewood. From Connecticut: Take I-91 to the MA Turnpike west to Exit 10 (formerly Exit 2). Follow to Route 20 west, which merges with Route 7 north. Turn left onto Route 183 south.
Tanglewood has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1938. Berkshire music lovers began a concert series in the 1930s and gave the orchestra its Lenox campus of more than 210 acres of lawns and meadows. It became a center for firy classical performances — Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with real cannon.

Age Requirements. All applicants to the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) must have completed their secondary school (high school) education. It is expected that applicants to the TMC will have advanced musical skills, and therefore most successful applicants will have completed or nearly completed their undergraduate education.
