Barrett was the band's original frontman and primary songwriter, known for his whimsical style of psychedelia, English-accented singing, and stream-of-consciousness writing style.

He also composed many of their songs . He was responsible for inspiring an entire generation of musicians to develop their own indigenous brand of English rock music.
