I know that Syd had a tight connection with Richard and David during the recording of "Barrett" (Syd's final solo album, released in late 1970 for those who don't know), and that Syd would often look into their recording sessions for "Atom Heart Mother", but my only guess is that he was tipped from someone he knew that they were back at Abbey Roads, or maybe it was just pure luck.
