The existence of a church is not expressly mentioned in the Domesday Survey, but the name occurs twice to indicate the locality of property held by the canons of St. Paul's Cathedral.

Orphaned at a young age, he was adopted by his father’s brother Dionysius, who brought him to Rome. There, Pancras and his uncle were converted to Christianity, by the pope himself according to some accounts.
