    Arbeia was a large Roman fort in South Shields, Tyne & Wear, England, now ruined, and which has been partially reconstructed. It was first excavated in the 1870s. All modern buildings on the site were cleared in the 1970s. It is managed by Tyne and Wear Museums as Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum .

  3. Standing above the entrance to the River Tyne, Arbeia South Shields' Roman Fort guarded the main sea route to Hadrian's Wall. It was a key garrison and military supply base to other forts along the Wall and is an important part of the history of Roman Britain.

South Shields was located just four miles beyond the eastern end of Hadrian’s wall of Segedunum ( Wallsend) and would have prevented anyone by-passing the wall by simply crossing the River Tyne.
