Ampliamente distribuido y común pero con distribución irregular. El macho es amarillo brillante saturado de anaranjado en la frente. Típicamente, muestra tonos menos marrón-oliva en la espalda y las alas que muchos yellowfinches, pero las poblaciones sureñas de Saffron son más opacas y más marrones arriba.
