He should be this generation's Thanos, not it's Darth Vader. I think they succeeded somewhat in that. Darth Vader is more iconic than he is a good, fleshed out character, and Thanos is attempting to be that more than just a striking design with excellent voice work. Thanos is still missing the pieces to be truly fleshed out, though.
