  3. ACT 5, SCENE 1. Balthasar, a friend of Romeos, brings him news that Juliet is dead and lies in the Capulet tomb. Resolved to find her and join her in death, Romeo first visits an apothecary and bribes him to obtain an illegal (and lethal) poison. Trigger warning: Act 5 contains material discussing and portraying suicide.

  4. Act Five, Scene One. Romeo wanders the streets of Mantua, mulling over a dream he had the night before where Juliet was dead. Then, Balthasar arrives from Verona with the news of Juliet's apparent suicide. Romeo immediately orders Balthasar to prepare a horse so he can rush to Verona and see Juliet's body.

  5. In exile, Romeo wakes up after having a dream in which he dies and is kissed back to life by Juliet. His confidant, Bathalsar, arrives to tell him the sad news: Juliet is dead (Balthasar is not in on Juliets plan). Devastated, Romeo decides to head back to Verona immediately. He plans to commit suicide at Juliet’s grave.

  6. Romeo ignored his last dream, which portended death, but chooses to rejoice in this happy one, which predicts a return from—or life after—death itself. Balthasar tells Romeo that he has terrible news that he must nonetheless deliver, as is his duty: Juliet is dead and buried in the Capulet crypt.
