Quartered arms of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (based on his Order of the Garter stallplate in St. George's Chapel) Education and marriage. Robert Dudley was the fifth son of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, and his wife Jane, daughter of Sir Edward Guildford.
Robert was born in 1532 and Elizabeth in 1533, and they had known each other since they were children. Both had been in real danger of losing their heads during the reign of Elizabeth’s sister Queen Mary, and Elizabeth never forgot that Dudley had befriended her during this traumatic time.
At nearly 18 years of age, she married Robert Dudley, a son of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. In 1553, Robert Dudley was condemned to death and imprisoned in the Tower of London, where Amy Dudley was allowed to visit him.
21 de mar. de 2024 · When his wife, Amy, née Robsart, died in September 1560, it was widely rumoured that Dudley had murdered her in order to marry Elizabeth. Though there is no evidence to support this suspicion , Dudley did become an active suitor of the Queen.

Robert Dudley’s sojourn in the Tower coincided with that of the new queen’s half-sister, Elizabeth (who Mary suspected of plotting against her). They had been friends since childhood, Dudley having been among her brother Edward’s companions.
It was at this time that Robert Dudley met and married Amy Robsart, the daughter of Sir John Robsart, a gentleman farmer in Norfolk. They married in June 1550 and Robert became known as Lord Robert and established himself as an important figure in the local community as well as serving as a Member of Parliament for Norfolk in subsequent years.
