A 1986 news article from UPI said that he was legally drunk and had cocaine in his system, but those substances didn't cause his death.
Richard George Manuel (April 3, 1943 – March 4, 1986) was a Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as a pianist and one of three lead singers in the Band, for which he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.. Richard Manuel comenzó a morirse en 1970, cuando The Band alcanzaba su mayor éxito comercial con Stage Fright y él ya no era capaz ni de completar sus propias composiciones. Dos años antes, en Music from Big Pink, había escrito cuatro de las canciones del disco y Robbie Robertson otras cuatro.
Richard Manuel nació en Stratford, Ontario, Canadá. Su padre Ed era mecánico y su madre era maestra de escuela. Creció cantando en el coro de la iglesia junto a sus tres hermanos, y tomó lecciones de piano a la edad de nueve años.
