The R5O-5 was a military version of the Lockheed Model 18, a civil aircraft designed to compete with the DC-3. It was used as a 14-seat transport by the U.S. Navy during World War II and later returned to civilian service.

The Coast Guard acquired a Lockheed Model 18 (R5O-1), Lockheed registration number 2008, and it was delivered and accepted on 14 May 1940. It was used as an executive transport aircraft.
Nearly 100 examples of the R5O, the military variant of the Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar transport, were delivered to the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard between 1940 and 1943. A few examples were still in operation as late as 1953.
