20 de abr. de 2020 · La zona glacial de Puncak Jaya, fue descubierta en 1623 por el explorador holandés Jan Carstenszoon, cuando, en un día excepcionalmente claro (la cumbre acostumbra a estar permanentemente cubierta de nubes y niebla) adivinó a observar la nieve que cubría el flanco norte del pico.

Se encuentra en las estribaciones occidentales de los montes Maoke, y constituye la cima más elevada de la isla y de Oceanía ( cumbres más altas de los cinco continentes ).
