This was partly thanks to its president, Lord Richard ‘Rab’ Butler. Pembroke was his father’s college: Montagu Butler had studied at Pembroke and during this time was also President of the Union. He became a Fellow and later Master of the College. During his time own as President, Rab led the Union’s first debating tour of America.
English is one of the largest arts subjects at Pembroke, and the College has a strong academic record in the subject; our Tripos results have in recent years usually been among the best in the University.
