18 de feb. de 2020 · Here, we discuss mitochondrial membrane dynamics and their regulation and describe how bioenergetics and cellular signalling are linked to these dynamic changes of mitochondrial morphology.
Mitochondria are surrounded by a double-membrane system, consisting of inner and outer mitochondrial membranes separated by an intermembrane space (Figure 10.1). The inner membrane forms numerous folds (cristae), which extend into the interior (or matrix) of the organelle.
29 de oct. de 2015 · The inner and outer membranes of mitochondria define three compartments within the organelle, each with its distinct role and corresponding protein components. The innermost compartment, surrounded by the inner membrane, is the mitochondrial matrix.
Mitochondria have a structure distinct from that of other organelles since they contain two membranes: the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) and the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), which separates the intermembrane space (IMS) from the matrix.
The outer mitochondrial membrane, which encloses the entire organelle, is 60 to 75 angstroms (Å) thick. It has a protein-to-phospholipid ratio similar to that of the cell membrane (about 1:1 by weight). It contains large numbers of integral membrane proteins called porins.
The enzymes of the respiratory chain are embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and they are essential to the process of oxidative phosphorylation, which generates most of the animal cell's ATP. The inner membrane is usually highly convoluted, forming a series of infoldings, known as cristae, that project into the matrix.
