Michael Schumacher was born in Huerth-Hermuelheim, Germany, on 3 January 1969. He started go-karting at four years of age and took part in his first race when he was 14. His first victory came in 1984 in the German Cadets Kart Championship. In 1989 he came third in the German F3 championship behind Karl Wendlinger and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
