In February 1961, Stevens cast Swedish actor Max von Sydow as Jesus. Von Sydow had never appeared in an English-language film and was best known for his performances in Ingmar Bergman's dramatic films. Von Sydow stated, "I thought with horror of Cecil B. DeMille and such things as Samson and Delilah and The Ten Commandments.

Max von Sydow, the great Swedish actor, plays Jesus as something more than human, but sadly less than divine. He never embraces Jesus’ humanity, but neither does he convince the viewer of his otherworldliness.

Von Sydow made his American film debut as Jesus Christ in the Biblical epic film The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) and went on to star in films such as Hawaii (1966), The Exorcist (1973), Three Days of the Condor (1975), Flash Gordon (1980), Conan the Barbarian (1982) and the James Bond adaptation Never Say Never Again (1983).
